I got caught "shoplifting" (supposedly) at the end of September. Was told to appear in court on Oct. 19.
Hired a lawyer and had to pay $750. Amount in question is some sheets for the bed!!! This is in NY. Asked lawyer's office, "now that I have a lawyer, do I still have to appear in court on the 19th" and legal secretary says "I don't know, I will let you know". So far I am getting alot for my money. So I called the court directly and spoke to them and they said I have to make "at least one appearance" in court. I asked them "since I have a lawyer, can't my lawyer appear for me" and like I said, was told "you have to appear at least once". Is this true? Thank you. ps If I have to appear at least once, what's the point of hiring a lawyer? Thank you.
